Remodeling Tips

Where did I put that?

Before the cabinets arrive, decide on a safe enclosed area for the cabinets and appliances to be delivered to - usually the garage or basement is a good location.  Pack up the kitchen or bathroom in advance of the remodel. While it’s a great time to "spring clean" your shelves, don’t forget to label the storage boxes well. This will make the unpacking process a lot easier and a lot more fun! Items that are fragile should be marked accordingly and stored in an area away from the construction.   If it’s a bathroom remodel, pretend you’re packing to go on a trip. Remember the hairdryer and curling iron!

Now where do I cook?

Plan a location outside of the area where the remodeling is being done to act as your temporary kitchen.  Remember your home is now a construction site and safety is everyone’s goal during demolition and construction.  In a fond farewell to you old kitchen, spend some time in it, cooking.  Make family favorites and throw them in the freezer.  We promise you…you’ll thank yourself later!  Make use of your outdoor grill…”Dad is pretty handy on that grill.”

Where did Fido and Kitty go!

If there isn’t an area in your home to keep them safely away from construction, especially during certain phases - it maybe a perfect time to treat your pet to a vacation at the kennel or a play date at a friend’s home.  Keep your pets safe and away from the construction.  Dust…there’s just no way to avoid it! We will block off areas to control as much of it as possible, but if there is a fish tank or electrical equipment in close proximity to the work – remember to keep them well covered.

You want it when?  Some hints to help you get through…

  • Honey, where’s the ice cream?  Don’t forget to find a good spot for the fridge!
  • You maybe able to temporarily move everything you need…except the kitchen sink! Consider where your "water source" will be in relation to your temporary kitchen.
  • Keep the microwave and a freezer stocked with microwavable meals
  • Toaster – remember that seldom used item from the wedding gifts.
  • Keep the basics handy:  butter, salt & pepper, favorite spices
  • Locate the dining area/table – no, not the couch in front of the TV
  • Tell the kids you’re on a picnic…use paper plates, napkins and disposable silverware…yes, plop down in front of the TV
  • Cleaning supplies and dishtowels – “yes honey, we still have to clean the dishes even though the man took the sink away…”
  • Coffee maker – keep filters and coffee close at hand
  • Utensils – can, bottle, wine openers, knives and microwavable dishes.
